Cleveland Cascade — Oakland, CaliforniaPro Bono Community Project
A grass roots effort to rehabilitate the Cascade increased awareness of the site within the community and eventually motivated the City of Oakland and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to allocate funding for this project. Our participation in the design process facilitated communication, opened up the dialog around the design possibilities and increased community involvement.
Our redesign was focused on maintaining the historic character of the site, but was necessarily constrained both by rules regarding changes to historic structures and by contemporary construction codes. For example, originally the pool edges were flush with grade, but modern public safety requirements call for raised edges to all pools as well as railings and lighting.
